Summary:
ICT for Cheaper Education (ICTeDU) is a project that is aimed at reducing the cost of University Education in the Rural Community of Buea. The aim was to use ICT in reducing the cost students pay in producing their assignments, research papers and doing research. Advantage has been taken of the laser printing to step down the cost of printing by 75%. Typing is also done at a step down price of 50% of the former price.
Vision, objectives and goals:
Vision:
To have more students enrolled in to the universities because of a step down in the cost of university education.
Objectives:
-To step down the cost of typing and printing for students in environs of Buea
-Explore the use of offline libraries for cheaper assess to information by students during research
-To be the price setter in secretariat services for students
So far we have been able to step down the price of printing from 100frs CFA to 25frs CFA and in the area where we are situated we have seven secretariats that have stepped down their prices to 25frs CFA.
The role of ICT:
Information Communication Technology is good and many in the developing countries are still amaze by it and would not question the prices that are set forth for the services that those employing these services charge them. ICT is used by students in preparing their assignments, research papers, projects and research. Many do not own computers and so rely on the services of others who have taken this as an advantage to extort money from the students. With use of less expensive tools like laser printers we have been able to turn the table around.
Target groups and impact:
Our target group are students especially University Students. Here we two separate groups, the final year students who are involved in project writing and the rest of rest of the student community who need to make use of computers for their assignments. We reach these students by opening secretariat points in localities where the student density is high like in Molyko Buea.
Achievements, milestones and wins:
We have been able to step down the cost of typing and printing a page from 200frs CFA to 100frs CFA and the cost of printing a page from 100frs CFA to 25frs CFA. (a page here is A4). We presently have about 50% of documentations in the neighborhood of Molyko operating at these prices.
