Summary:
There is a need in rural Nepal to increase the educational status of school-leaving certificate (SLC) students. Every year more than 50% of these students fail in their main board exam offered by the Office of Controller of Examinations, Nepal (OCE). The emergence of Wiki technology has potential in using it in education where teachers can fully manage students' records, examine how they are advancing and what they are currently doing. In addition, students can easily exchange information among themselves.
Simplicity, openness and unstructuredness of Wiki technology facilitate its use in school settings. Simplicity means that nothing has to be installed on the client's computer. Openness can be understood that there are no system-set restrictions in the use of Wiki.
Moreover, there is no need for separate permissions. Unstructuredness means - in contrast with other computer-supported collaborative systems - that Wiki does not frame the workflow or put clear restrictions on how it is used in schools. Teachers do not have to adapt to a given tool but can structure Wiki as needed.
The main objective of this paper is to design a classroom Wiki that will be used as a collaborative medium in public schools to teach SLC courses in rural Nepal so that the number of students that pass SLC can increase. The design is validated from teacher’s perspective using qualitative action research.
Vision, objectives and goals:
Problem Statement
The main reasons why student of rural schools are doing so bad in SLC board exam can be visualized in two perspectives. One is that, teachers support to students in their learning behavior (SLC-Courses) is not enough for students to overcome board exam in rural Nepal public school’s learning environment. Teachers lack good learning environment (medium) to reach and support individual students.
Another perspective is student learn in isolation environment. In public schools of Nepal, there is not much of support for students regarding course material resources, public schools lacks library, text books, supporting documents for courses and also limited resources available for teacher. The motivation of students toward education is decreasing
which is clearly shown by the result of board exam of 2006. The schools of those rural areas lack modern learning facilities computers, internet, effective teaching management and support.
Also, students from one school cannot help students from another school or even from same school because of lack of good collaborative environment. Inter-school interaction is almost nil and inside same school also interaction between student and teacher (and student-student) is very less when compared to what T-S or S-S interaction should be inside general classroom.
1.3 Thesis objective
The problems student walking distance from home-school-home which is around 2 hrs (average) per day, inter-school communication is almost nil, not so many skilled teachers available in rural schools, limited resources (for both student and teacher), student study in isolation environment, are the reasons which acts as a barrier for rural students of Nepal in their learning process. This paper will discuss whether, SLC-Wiki, a Wiki-collaborative
learning approach can overcome above stated problems in rural schools of Nepal or not by mainly focusing on two questions,
• Can this new collaborating learning environment act as a medium for teachers to teach and help teachers to support students in their learning process?
• Can teachers be able to take student out of their isolation learning environment using SLC-Wiki i.e. can teacher support student collaboration?
The ideal goal of this new learning approach is to make students self-dependent on their learning by creating a good learning pedagogic environment, so that the students can pass S.L.C board exam.
The role of ICT:
The standard features of Wiki is shown from different Wikis available mainly MediaWiki and PBWiki were used. MediaWiki was used to show the working of standard features such as recent changes, WatchList, my contribution and PBWiki was used to show how easily teachers can create pages course pages, group project, syllabus, and classroom pages. Since connecting one Wiki with other Wikis is simple and is supported by the function called Inter-Wiki, so combing different Wikis is possible in Wiki-Collaboration.
Some of the features of SLC-Wiki were taken from Wards Wiki and some features were taken from various classroom Wikis implemented in schools all around the world. Low fidelity prototype (Pen and Pencil prototype) was used to test the working of those specific features which are present in SLC-Wiki only and not in MediaWiki or PBWiki.
This system needs intranet between the PC's and a server with internet.
Achievements, milestones and wins:
--act as a medium for teachers to teach and help teachers to support students in their learning process
--teachers to be able to take student out of their isolation learning environment
-- increasing student collaboration
